Resumen | This is a scholarly and fascinating book about the remarkable relationship between a forest people and their environment. The Yanomami, as indigenous society living on the watershed between the Brazilian Amazon and the Venezuelan Orinoco, depend almost entirely upon what the forest has to offer them. To do so requires an intricate knowledge of plants and animals, their ecology and their uses. Much has been written about the Yanomami over the last twenty years, but until recently this fascinating aspect of their culture has been relatively poorly documented. This book, wich is based largely on new and original research carried out by the authors between 1993 and 1996, has filled in many of the gaps in our knowledge. It includes a comprehensive review of all the pre-existing material, is lavishly illustrated with photographs and paintings, and provides the first complete synthesis of Yanomami ethnobotany as we know it. |
