Título del material: Millenial Ecuador: critical essays on cultural transformation & social dynamics (Inglés) (Ver)
Categoría: Libro
Autor: Whitten Jr., Norman E. (Editor)
Resumen: Since the 1980s, Ecuador has seen five indigenous uprisings, the emergence of the powerful Pachakutik political movement and the strengthening of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador and the Associations of Black Ecuadorians, all of which have contributed substantially to a new constitution proclaiming the country to be "mulitethnic and multicultural". Furthermore, January 2003 saw the inauguration of a new populist president, who immediately appointed two indigenous persons to his cabinet. In this volume, 11 critical essays, plus a lengthy introduction and epilogue explore the multicultural forces that have allowed Ecuador's indigenous peoples to have such dramatic effects on the nation's political structure. The authors use their ethnographic experience to understand both the cultural systems of local-level aesthetics, ritual and cosmology and the national polical-economic transformations that have shaped this paradoxical, globalizing nation. In their descriptions and analyses, they bring together interpretive anthropological, sociological and historical scholarshop to consider these transcultural and intercultural phenomena. Presenting a microcosm of the cultural transformations that are occuring throughout the Americas, these essays should appeal to Latin Americanists, social scientists and humanists of the Andes and Amazonia, and, in particular, anthropologists as well as undergraduates and graduate students.

Título del material: Aboriginal Australia: Culture and Society/ Bush Food (Ingles) (Ver)
Categoría: Revista
Autor: Isaacs, Jennifer
Resumen: Bush foods provide a balanced and nutritious diet. Since the arrival of Europeans in Australia the health of Aboriginal people has suffered drastically, in part because of changes in eating habits. A diet high in flour, sugar and tea has contributed to malnutrition, growth retardation, diabetes and reduced resistance to infectious disease. Other factors, such as increasingly sedentary lifestyles and poor hygene conditions, have also undermined Aboriginal health.

Título del material: Aboriginal Australia: Culture and Society/ Australian Languages (Inglés) (Ver)
Categoría: Revista
Autor: Dixon, R.M.W.
Resumen: European contact has had a devastating effect on Australian languages. Of the original 200 to 250 distinct tongues at least 50 are no longer spoken by anyone. Many Aboriginal people are deeply concerned about the state of their languages. Language centres have been established in different parts of the country to keep the languages going. Aboriginal media associations, wich broadcast radio and television programmes in Aboriginal languages, are another important means of preservation.

Título del material: Aboriginal Australia: Culture and Society/ Hunting and Gathering (Inglés) (Ver)
Categoría: Revista
Autor: Satterthwait, L.
Resumen: In the society in wich we live technology and the idea of technological "progress" are very important. For many centuries now people from European, or "western", cultures have tended to judge other people on the basis of the technologies they use. This is especially true of European attitudes towards the Aboriginal people of Australia. When Europeans were first settling the continent (from 1788 in Sydney Cove) the Aboriginal people were satisfying their food needs by hunting and gathering-that is, by the capture of fish and the collection of plants and small animal. Because they did not raise livestock, grow crops, or have identifiable farms, as Europeans did, their technologies were regarded as "simple" or "primitive".

Título del material: Aboriginal Australia: Culture and Society/ Carving and Sculpture (Inglés) (Ver)
Categoría: Revista
Autor: Akerman, K
Resumen: Sculpture and carving are today practised in Aboriginal communities throughout Australia, contribuiting to the religious, aesthetic and economic needs of the artists and their communities. This art tradition has undoubtedly been a part of Aboriginal life for thousands of years. However, most of the items produced would not have survived the passage of time. Much Aboriginal art was not meant to be permanent, in the manner, say, of European art. It was also made of materials-wood, clay fibre-that are liable to decay.
